The crash

After a stop at Beirut the the plane continued to Rome/Ciampino airport. While approaching the airport at 6500 feet the two starboard engines caught fire making it impossible for the pilot to control the plane. He tried to make a forced landing in a field but the plane exploded while still some 60 feet in the air. At 11:50 the plane crashed 6 km east of the airport.

The mail

A part of the mail could be salvaged and it was processed by the Italian Post at Rome, where a handstamp + a datestamp was used (type G + H). These handstamps are found on all the mail from this crash. The British Postmaster General announced that the salvaged mail had arrived in London four days after the crash.
Most of the mail for the Nordic countries was sent via Germany. I have seen one item which was forwarded via Great Britain where different handstamps were in use.
The Nordic countries used different labels when forwarding the mail to the recipients.

I have recorded 15 items addressed to a Nordic country:

To Denmark

To Finland

To Norway
