The crash
In May 1928 an agreement between the Icelandic Post and the local airline was reached.
The first airmail service in Iceland was planned to open on 2 June 1928 and a special airmail stamp and an airmail label was produced.
Tha plane was a Junkers F 13 chartered from Deutsche Lufthansa.
The flight from Reykjavik to Akureyri with stops in Isafjördur and Siglufjörder had to be postponed until 4 June when it was carried out as planned.
The returnflight was also postponed one day due to bad weather. On 6 June the plane took off from Akureuri with mail for the three planned stops.
After leaving Siglufjördur the plane encountered problems due to bad weather. The pilot had to make an emergency landing in the water around 20 km. from Reykjavik.
The plane was towed by a fishing boat into the harbor at Reykjavik where it arrived in the morning 7 June.
The mail
The vast majority of the carried mail was philatelic mail.
The mail for the return flight from Akureyri show postmark dated 4.6. or 5.6. and the mail from the two other stops were postmarked on 4.6.
