The crash
The plane left Paris on schedule, but crashed on the final approach to Shannon Airport two miles west of the airport at 02:09. The aircraft broke up on impact, caught fire and was destroyed.
The crash investigation concluded that a mechanic had incorrectly set the connections between the primary and alternative source of static air pressure for the altimeters which resulted in an error of 500 feet in the altimeter indication. A further contributing factor was the restriction of vision from the cockpit resulting from fogging of the unheated windshield panels.
The mail
Mail was recovered and forwarded without any special markings.
According to “Air Crash Mail of the World” no covers has been recorded.
In an older auction lot I spotted the following description “Dec. 1946 badly charred env. to Chicago with Norway 1½k + 40o (probably from N.461228 Shannon Airport wreck). Perhaps Argyll & Etkin ?
